Fireworks Safety September Is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month Repeated advances against childhood cancer have been called a "medical miracle" because 4 out of 5 children survive cancer today, a vast difference from the early 1960s when childhood cancers were nearly always fatal. However, not all children's cancers are easily treated and childhood cancer is still expected to cause 1,585 tragic premature deaths in 2005. Children who are newly diagnosed, an estimated 9,510 this year, will probably get the best care at one of the large pediatric cancer centers. Parents can find a leading pediatric cancer center by calling 1-800-ACS-2345. There are several types of childhood cancer, with leukemia, brain, and other central nervous system tumors affecting about half of the children with cancer. August Is Vision & Hearing Awareness Month As kids go back to school it is a good idea to have their hearing and vision checked to correct any problems that may cause them to have a hard time concentrating or learning in school. Children who sit in front of the PC all day are put at a higher risk to develop myopia. Make sure your child sits at a proper distance from the computer screen to cut down on the glare in the eyes and to help avoid eyestrain, which could lead to vision loss.
Avoid loud noises. Always keep the volume kept down at a minimum when watching TV or listening to music in order to detour the risk of hearing loss. Loud noises can cause you to lose significant hearing losses which once your hearing is gone you cannot get it back again. Domestic Violence Awareness Month December Is Needy Kids Awareness Month December is the month of giving. The time of year when we think of presents around the tree with all the decorations and festivities that surround the holidays. A time of sharing and expressing good will to one another; except of course when you’re in line at the mall. “Just kidding”. Let's not forget those who may not share our same good fortune this year; leaving no child behind let us all help at least one family enjoy a Merry Christmas. Let not December be the only month we think of needy people. There are 11 more months during the year that those who do without have to face a desperate existence. Some may be because of drugs and alcohol that the children do with out because their parents spend their money foolishly. Or it may be a single mom who is just having a hard time with a low paying job, daycare and trying to put food on the table. Lets remember needy people have needs all year around not just at Christmas and it’s the children we have a concern for, whatever the reason for their dilemma we want to help the kids. Toys are wonderful at Christmas and no child wants to be left out at Christmas time, however, lets not forget that kids need food, shelter, clothing, a good education and someone who cares about them all year round. All kids need someone to love them and if their situation is they come from a dysfunctional home, any love you can give a child who needs love can spark an interest to go on in life to do good works and accomplish great things. You never know how giving to a child in need even if it’s just a little kindness can ignite something inside that child to aspire to great things. The alternative in unacceptable and if a child never knows what it is to be loved their future is desperate and uncertain and affects us all. Lets all give a little something to someone who is less fortunate this Christmas and throughout the all the New Year.
